Setting goals and resolutions at the start of each new year is not for everyone. We are often encouraged (*pressured*) to embark on unsustainable health kicks or include far too many changes in our already bust routines. So whilst you may choose to work on larger personal and work goals this year, here are five small habits to commit to that will have a guaranteed benefit for anyone and everyone.
Get outside everyday – for 2 minutes, 20 minutes or 2 hours, fresh air and being in nature is good for us. It’s the perfect excuse to stretch your legs or take a break from work, and also has proven benefits for our mental health.
Sun cream – it’s an easy one to forget – especially in Winter, but whilst we are on the subject of being outside, applying suncream to our faces should be a habit all year round to protect our skin from those harsh UV rays and to prevent early ageing.
Supplements – Most doctors recommend we supplement Vitamin D here in the UK during Winter months to avoid deficiencies during these shorter, darker days. Those with vegetarian or vegan diets may also wish to consider further supplementation, but always consult with your doctor first.
Make a note – I think we could all do with a little less stress on our mind so we can concentrate on more important things. Whether you are a diary, journal, to-do list, post-it or memo app type of person, making a note of what’s on your mind ALWAYS helps me to think straighter and relieve a little stress.
Establishing a bedtime routine – Everything we do could always be improved when we have had enough sleep. Establishing a consistent and achievable bed time routine is single handedly one of the most important things we can do for our health, career, relationships and day to day life. Reducing screen time in the lead up to sleep, brushing and flossing teeth, establishing a skincare routine and preparing for the next day (ie. packing a bag, preparing an outfit), can all be incorporated into this routine. Relaxing music, reading and meditation can all be used as tools to help drift off easier.
